Last fall we had the opportunity to design an identity and labels for High Style Brewing Co. based in San Diego. They’re on the forefront of cannabis infused non-alcoholic craft beer. Currently we’ve assisted in producing marketing materials and some advertising to help get the word out on this innovative product.
We’ve been designing the Chelsea Chamber Players’ holiday posters for... wait for it... over twenty years. This selection of five poster designs from years past have been reproduced as holiday cards and are on sale at Bumbles Dry Goods in Chelsea, Michigan. Proceeds from sales go to the Chelsea Chamber Players.
The Kresge Foundation is a private, national foundation that works to expand opportunities in America’s cities through grantmaking and social investing in arts and cultural, educational, environmental, health, human services and community development in Detroit. We had the good fortune to design this year’s annual report which tells the story of how the foundation is evolving and expanding cross-disciplinary investments and partnerships to address intractable problems in America’s cities.
Happy to report that we've had two drawings accepted to the Paperworks Exhibition at the Scarab Club in Detroit. The Air of the Free by Wendell Berry, and CKLW The Big 8 are both framed ink drawings on paper. The Exhibition will be up from September 12-October 13, 2018 with a reception Friday, September 14, 5-8 pm, and a Gallery Talk Thursday, September 20 at 6 pm.
Unless you are a professional in the hospitality business, you probably don't recognize the name Horst Schulze. Think maverick combined with titan and you're getting warm. The design of his logo and business cards was meant to reflect the legendary hotelier: simple, sophisticated, classy. Thanks to Ann Arbor's Foresight Group for the foil stamped cards.
I know a guy who hosts a 2-day bike/camping event annually (this is the 31st year). Can't say where, can't say when, can't say much of anything, other than this: If you participate, you get one of these stickers we designed. Mysterious, no?
Business cards, who needs 'em? People that meet clients face-to-face, that's who. George Smith and his partners have been in the accounting business since his grandfather started the company in 1945. We were tasked with updating their corporate identity: straightforward, simple, approachable--- exactly what you'd want in a CPA, no?
Chelsea State Bank will be sponsoring Financial Health Fairs this spring to help their customers evaluate their, you guessed it, financial health. 12 Acre Studio figured an EKG/piggy bank combination was in order, and here's the result. Print and online ads, posters, and merchandise to follow.

On Sunday March 19, the Chelsea Chamber Players will perform the debut of Stormie: A Cinderella Story at the Chelsea Depot. Written by Ann Brill with a score by Brian Brill, this family concert couples an Irish folktale with music that will please young and old alike, as they say. Fifteen plus years and counting of posters; we always enjoy collaborating with the Chelsea Chamber Players.
Want to make someone's day? Parent, friend, state representative? Drop them a line, put a stamp on it, pop it in the mailbox. Your personalized transmittal will emerge from your addressee's junkmail and bills as a beacon of friendship and goodwill. Take a look at the 12 Acre Studio selection of postcards and notecards on etsy.com. Letterpress printed (mostly). Operators are standing by.
An array of new and not-so-new work will be available at our studio sale this coming May. Many pieces, including those pictured here, will be presented in custom, blackened cedar frames.
Along with the big expensive stuff, we'll be offering some modestly priced items at our Studio Sale in May. All natural (except for the ink and varnish) birchbark bookmarks, each with a one-of-a-kind look and feel will be priced to move. We'll display these in the check-out lane to encourage impulse buying.
This coming May we'll host a studio sale that will feature paintings, constructions, drawings and some letterpress printed notecards. Above is a detail from a series of drawings (which will be available at our studio sale) based on Detroit Tiger baseball cards from 1979. The groundwork for the dominant 1984 World Series Championship team was being laid, Sparky Anderson was at the helm and Ernie Harrell was in the booth. There are eight or nine other drawings in the series.
Joan of Arc, Richard Nixon and Martin Luther King have January birthdays. Norman Rockwell, Frederick Douglass and Marian Anderson arrived in the month of February. Who knew? Stop by Foresight Group (formerly White Pine Printers) on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor and pick up the Jan/Feb 2017 calendar designed by 12 Acre Studio. Each day commemorates a person or event that came about on said day. You just may learn something— we did.
President Truman is highly respected by the husband of a friend. Said friend commissioned 12 Acre Studio to create a memento of the the 33rd president of the United States. The bonus to this project was combing through the trove of quotes and utterances that are attributed to Truman, and then wedging as many of them as possible into the side panels. Maybe you are in need of portrait, be it friend, partner, family member or hero. Shall we?
Every December the Detroit Artists Market offers one-of-a-kind creations from local artists and artisans. This year's pop-up retail shop at the Somerset Collection (2801 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy) employs the graphic 12 Acre Studio created for their direct mail campaign. It works big, it works small. Most importantly, it works.
The Ann Arbor Convention and Visitors Bureau has created a Sports Commission to help attract sporting events to the area. With facilities on the University of Michigan campus, including Michigan Stadium, as well as Eastern Michigan and the local high schools, there's plenty of venues for a variety of events. 12 Acre Studio was asked to create portraits of local legends for the Sports Commission offices. Bo Schembechler, Gerald Ford and Willis Ward all left their mark on the UM football program, and each embodied the spirit of competition and sportsmanship that extended beyond the field of play. Ink on aspen panels, 24" x 36".
The Chelsea Chamber Players gather once again on Sunday, December 4 for two performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Chelsea. And they needed a poster, which is where 12 Acre Studio comes in. If you have an opportunity to attend you will not be disappointed. Be prepared to experience holiday joy in your heart that doesn't involve shopping or booze. Imagine that. The performance will feature the First United Methodist Church choir as well as students from the Chelsea High School orchestra and choir.
Esquire Magazine has been around forever, and for the last several years it's become more of a style guide in the Men's Journal mold. Regardless, over the years plenty of top-notch writers have contributed articles ranging from profiles to expose´s. The Esquire Classic Podcast, hosted by David Brancaccio, is a weekly (more or less) effort that looks at an article from the past and discusses it with either the author or someone familiar with the author and subject. Always worth a listen, many of the pieces, in retrospect, help to define the era that they were written in. Cindy Katz is the designated reader, and has an uncanny ability to sound as if she had written whatever she reads.
